Colin McPhee was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1900. He began studying piano at the age of six and quickly displayed a prodigious talent. In 1916, he moved to New York City to study at the Institute of Musical Art, where he studied composition with Percy Grainger. After graduating in 1920, McPhee traveled to Europe, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and Arnold Schoenberg in Vienna.

In 1925, McPhee returned to the United States and began teaching at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He also began composing music, and his early works were influenced by the Impressionist and Expressionist styles. In 1931, McPhee received a Guggenheim Fellowship to study the music of Southeast Asia. He spent the next two years traveling throughout the region, collecting recordings and studying the music of various cultures.

McPhee's work in Southeast Asia had a profound impact on his own music. His later compositions show a strong influence of the music he studied, and he began to incorporate elements of Javanese and Balinese music into his own work. McPhee also began to write about the music of Southeast Asia, and his book, "Music in Bali," published in 1946, is still considered one of the most important works on the subject.

In 1939, McPhee moved to California, where he taught at Mills College and the University of California, Berkeley. He continued to compose music and write about the music of Southeast Asia until his death in 1994.

Colin McPhee was a pioneering figure in the world of music. His work as a composer, ethnomusicologist, and scholar helped to bridge the gap between Western and non-Western music. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and scholars today.
