World War I (1914-1918)

Causes: Imperialism, nationalism, militarism, and a complex web of alliances led to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by a Serbian nationalist and the subsequent declaration of war by Austria-Hungary against Serbia ignited a chain reaction that quickly drew other major European powers into the conflict.

Key Events: The war began with a series of German victories on the Western Front, but the Allies (France, Britain, and Russia) eventually stabilized the front lines. The conflict then bogged down into a bloody stalemate, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. In 1917, the United States entered the war on the side of the Allies, and their fresh troops helped to turn the tide in favor of the Allies. The war ended in 1918 with the Armistice of Compiègne, which led to the defeat of Germany and its allies.

Consequences: World War I had a profound impact on the world. The war left millions dead, wounded, or displaced, and it led to the collapse of several empires, including the Russian, German, and Austro-Hungarian empires. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended the war, was widely seen as too harsh on Germany, and it contributed to the outbreak of World War II.

World War II (1939-1945)

Causes: The rise of fascism and Nazism in Europe, the failure of the League of Nations, and the appeasement of Nazi Germany by the Western powers led to the outbreak of World War II in 1939. Germany's invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, marked the beginning of the war.

Key Events: The war began with a series of German victories, including the conquest of Poland, France, and the Low Countries. In 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union, opening up the Eastern Front. The United States entered the war on the side of the Allies in 1941, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The war reached its turning point in 1942, with the Battle of Stalingrad (a Soviet victory) and the Battle of Midway (an American victory). The Allies gradually gained the upper hand, and in 1945, Germany and Japan were both defeated.

Consequences: World War II was the most destructive conflict in human history. The war left tens of millions dead, wounded, or displaced, and it led to the widespread destruction of cities and infrastructure. The war also had a profound impact on the world's political landscape. The United States and the Soviet Union emerged from the war as the two dominant superpowers, and the Cold War began soon after the war ended.
