Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was a brilliant Indian social reformer, jurist, and political leader. He was the first Law Minister of India and the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. Ambedkar's life was dedicated to fighting against caste discrimination and untouchability, and for the upliftment of the Dalits, India's oppressed caste.
In 1920, Ambedkar traveled to the United States to pursue higher education. He studied at Columbia University and the London School of Economics, where he earned doctorates in economics and law. However, Ambedkar's dream of completing his studies was almost cut short when he was denied a visa to return to India. This unfortunate event is the subject of his book, Waiting for Visa.
Waiting for Visa is a powerful and moving account of Ambedkar's struggle for education and equality. The book is filled with thought-provoking insights into the caste system, untouchability, and the importance of education. Ambedkar also writes about his experiences in the United States and his interactions with other Indian students who were also fighting for their rights.
Waiting for Visa is a must-read for anyone interested in social justice, caste system, untouchability, dalit rights, and Indian history. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of education and the fight for equality.
Quotes from Waiting for Visa

- “The caste system is a curse on India. It divides us and prevents us from reaching our full potential.”
- “We must fight for justice and equality until we achieve it.”
About the Author
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (1891-1956) was a brilliant Indian social reformer, jurist, and political leader. He was the first Law Minister of India and the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. Ambedkar dedicated his life to fighting against caste discrimination and untouchability, and for the upliftment of the Dalits.
Ambedkar was born in Mhow, India, into a Dalit family. Dalits are considered to be the lowest caste in the Hindu caste system and are subjected to severe discrimination and oppression. Ambedkar experienced first-hand the horrors of the caste system and was determined to fight against it.
Ambedkar's fight against caste discrimination began when he was a young student. He was often denied admission to schools and colleges because of his caste. However, Ambedkar was determined to get an education and fought against all odds. He eventually earned doctorates in economics and law from Columbia University and the London School of Economics.
After returning to India, Ambedkar continued to fight for the rights of Dalits. He founded the Dalit Panthers Party and led several protests against caste discrimination. Ambedkar's work was instrumental in the passing of the Untouchability (Offences) Act in 1955, which made untouchability a crime.
Ambedkar is considered one of the most important figures in Indian history. He was a great social reformer who fought for justice and equality for all.
