In the early 1990s, the author was promoted to vice president of IBM's software development division. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the development of all of IBM's software products.

In 1999, the author was appointed president of IBM. He was the first non-IBM engineer to hold this position. As president, the author led IBM through a period of significant growth and transformation.

In 2002, the author retired from IBM as chairman of the board. He had spent 40 years with the company, and he had risen to the highest levels of leadership.
