In 1584, Raleigh sailed to the New World with Sir Richard Grenville. They explored the coast of what is now North Carolina and claimed it for England. Raleigh named the land Virginia in honor of Queen Elizabeth I.

Raleigh returned to England in 1585 and became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth. He was knighted in 1587 and appointed to several important positions, including Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall and Warden of the Stannaries. Raleigh also became involved in a number of business ventures, including the slave trade.

In 1595, Raleigh returned to the New World with a group of colonists. He founded a settlement on Roanoke Island, but the colony was abandoned two years later. Raleigh attempted to send more colonists to Roanoke Island in 1598 and 1602, but both expeditions failed.

In 1603, King James I ascended to the throne and Raleigh fell out of favor. He was accused of treason and imprisoned in the Tower of London.

Raleigh was released from prison in 1616 and returned to the New World in search of gold. He died in 1618 in a battle with the Spanish.

Raleigh's legacy is a mixed one, but there is no doubt that he was one of the most important figures of the Elizabethan era.
