She Persisted: Helen Keller, Courtney Sheinmel, and the Inspiring Story of a Woman Who Changed the World
Helen Keller was born in 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. At the age of 19 months, she contracted scarlet fever, which left her deaf and blind. Despite these challenges, Helen went on to become a world-renowned author, speaker, and activist. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1904 and became the first deaf and blind person to earn a college degree. Helen Keller's autobiography, The Story of My Life, was published in 1903 and became a bestseller. She also wrote several other books, including Optimism: An Essay (1903),The World I Live In (1908),and Out of the Dark (1913). Helen Keller was a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. She founded the American Foundation for the Blind in 1925 and served as its president for over 40 years. She also worked with the American Red Cross and the American Civil Liberties Union. Helen Keller was a powerful voice for social justice and equality. She spoke out against discrimination and prejudice, and she fought for the rights of people with disabilities. Helen Keller died in 1968 at the age of 87. She is buried in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Her legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
