Early Life and Education
Nicolas Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on April 17, 1903. His father, Vladimir Nabokov, was a successful novelist and poet, and his mother, Elena Ivanovna Sikorsky, was the daughter of a prominent Russian general. Nabokov's early childhood was spent in a world of privilege and culture. He received a classical education and began studying music at a young age.
In 1919, the Nabokov family fled Russia during the Russian Revolution. They settled in Berlin, where Nicolas continued his musical studies. In 1922, the family moved to the United States, and Nicolas enrolled at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He studied composition with Rosario Scalero and conducting with Fritz Reiner.
Career
After graduating from Curtis, Nabokov began his career as a composer and conductor. He wrote music for a variety of genres, including opera, ballet, and symphony. He also conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
