About the Author
Coretta Scott King (1927-2006) was an American civil rights leader and the wife of Martin Luther King Jr. She was a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement, and she continued to fight for justice and equality long after her husband's assassination.
Coretta Scott King was born in Heiberger, Alabama, in 1927. She attended Antioch College in Ohio, where she met Martin Luther King Jr. The couple married in 1953 and had four children together.
Coretta Scott King played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement. She was a close advisor to her husband and often spoke out on his behalf. She also led her own campaigns for civil rights, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches.
After her husband's assassination in 1968, Coretta Scott King continued to fight for justice and equality. She founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change and served as its president for many years. She also spoke out against racism, sexism, and poverty.
Coretta Scott King died in 2006 at the age of 78. She is remembered as one of the most important figures in the Civil Rights Movement.
