Early Life
Curtis McGrath was born in 1921 in Waterloo, Iowa. His parents were farmers, and he grew up in a close-knit family. From a young age, McGrath was fascinated by the military. He would spend hours reading books and magazines about war and dreaming of becoming a soldier.
In 1941, when the United States entered World War II, McGrath was just 20 years old. He immediately enlisted in the Army and was sent to basic training. After basic training, McGrath was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division.
World War II
The 101st Airborne Division was one of the most elite units in the Army. They were trained to parachute into combat behind enemy lines. McGrath quickly rose through the ranks and became a platoon sergeant.
In 1944, the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Normandy on D-Day. McGrath and his men parachuted into France and fought their way to the beaches. They then fought their way through France and into Germany.
During the Battle of the Bulge, McGrath was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. He led his men in a daring attack on a German machine gun nest, and he personally killed several enemy soldiers.
McGrath continued to fight throughout the war. He was wounded several times, but he always refused to leave his men. He eventually rose to the rank of captain.
After the War
After the war, McGrath returned to Iowa and married his sweetheart, Dorothy. They had two children. McGrath worked as a farmer and a teacher. He also served in the Iowa National Guard.
In 1950, McGrath was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He served in Korea for a year and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.
After the Korean War, McGrath returned to Iowa and resumed his civilian life. He continued to serve in the National Guard, and he eventually retired as a colonel.
Legacy
Curtis McGrath died in 2005 at the age of 84. He was survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his two children.
