After graduating from Harvard Law School, Pascual joined the US Foreign Service. He served in a variety of roles, including as US ambassador to Ukraine and Mexico. He also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Iran nuclear deal.
In 2011, Pascual was appointed Special Envoy to the Middle East and North Africa. He served in this role for three years, during which time he helped to coordinate the international response to the Arab Spring. He also played a leading role in the effort to negotiate a ceasefire in Syria.
